Master Bedroom, South London

The star of the show in this master bedroom was always the skyline views across London viewed from a very generous bay window. The owners were very keen to use this as a day bed and retain as much of the sky and light as possible. Plenty of storage needed to be created so we installed full height wardrobes in the adjoining dressing room, bookshelves either side of the fireplace and deep drawers under the bay window. The overall feel of the space is now really tranquil, elegant and balanced with a new order that my clients are loving, especially now that she can also use her dressing room as an occasional study to work from.

Whisky Room, West Sussex

This room was the most wonderful creative challenge. I was asked to transform a neglected playroom, no longer used by the teenagers of the family, into a grown-up whisky room for the owners to enjoy before and after dinner with friends.

The brief was to create a room that felt comfortable, atmospheric and properly useful, with a nod to the owners’ homeland through the use of tartan. We also wanted to retain the existing joinery, but give it a much-needed lift through better detailing, storage and lighting, so it sat beautifully within the Georgian proportions.

With the help of Adam Rose Alison, the joinery was given a real facelift, incorporating wine storage, foxed mirrors, a glass cabinet and new knobs. Boura and White supplied the elegant armchairs and sofas, creating plenty of comfortable seating around the original marble fireplace. The stunning hand-rubbed solid brass fire fender from Acres Farm provides an extra place to perch with a drink, while a number of antique side tables and a large marble-topped console helped bring weight, age and balance to the room.

Colourwise, we chose Farrow & Ball’s rich Inchyra Blue for the joinery and Little Greene’s Nether Red for the walls - a combination that felt comforting, earthy and nostalgic. These tones worked beautifully with the fabrics in the room, from the tartan to the marbled cushions and the paisley print on the sofa.

The result is a room that feels both intimate and generous; a space with a proper sense of occasion, but one that is still deeply comfortable and welcoming.

“Charlotte helped us articulate, and bring to life, the vision we had for a special room that is already getting plenty of use, and wows, from family and friends.”

Guest Twin Bedroom, South London

Fun and expressive was the brief for the feeling for this twin bedroom intended for children to stay in. Working with a beautiful Edwardian fireplace and the client’s existing blind we edited some existing joinery to become bookshelves and wardrobes with eye-catching detailing and knobs that give a pop of intense colour. The matching headboards are in a stunning rainbow print whose blue and pink is continued in the floral print of the reupholstered rocking chair, a family favourite that needed a new lease of life. The scheme is grounded with some beautiful antique furniture that adds to the charm of this lively room.

Guest Double, South London

We transformed this compact guest bedroom into a cosy, elevated space. By revamping the existing joinery, we created a considered focal wall complete with an intimate vanity space. Small patterened, enveloping wallpaper adds immediate texture and warmth, while lacquered bedside lamps cast a charming, diffused glow through perforated shades. Every detail was curated to make visitors feel instantly welcomed and right at home.

Dining Room, Surrey

An intimate, smart and dramatic feel was what we set out to achieve with this formal dining room that sits at the heart this family home. I was immediately drawn to Lewis & Wood’s incredible range of mural-style botanical wallpapers but wanted to ensure the design was muted and sat quietly on the walls above a new dado and panelling that would elevate the room. The paint colours chosen were Charleston Gray for the panelling, Rolling Fog for the doors and Shaded White (all by Farrow & Ball) for the ceiling. The wallpaper is Adam’s Eden in Roan which sits very comfortably alongside the textured Birdlip Twill window dressings in Slade also by Lewis & Wood; the reverse of which was used as a border trim down each curtain and the blind.

Sourcing an oval, extendable, pedestal dining table of the perfect dimensions for the space was a huge challenge, so Norfolk Interior Specialists created this bespoke oak piece with beautiful spherical pedestal legs. Under this sits a stunning antique carpet sourced by Farnham Antique Carpets. Pendants over the table are by Visual Comfort and glossy Gourd vase lamp bases on the antique side table in tortoiseshell from Vaughan.

Cloakroom, Surrey

Cloakrooms are a wonderful room to get to design, because they offer the virtue of a compact, contained space, allowing us to experiment a little; here in Surrey with more colour and pattern than the client would normally be comfortable with. I installed half height tongue and groove panels in Elephant’s Breath to add tradition and depth to the room, plus give a more finished feel to the space.

The fabulous wallpaper is by Dado Atelier and called Suzani, inspired by an antique Suzani textile, its hand-drawn feel lending such character to this downstairs loo. I picked out the pretty light blue of the design to wash the ceiling in a matching Lulworth Blue, also by Farrow & Ball, giving the effect of a summer’s day up above. The curved antique gold mirror over the basin is by Oka and pair of alabaster and brass wall lights, that give a pretty low glow to the room, are from Pooky. The double bench was previously owned by the client, but we reupholstered the seat in Fermoie’s Rabanna and sourced a little antique side table that sits snugly to the left of the basin.

Boot Room, Surrey

The space and light offered by this boot room was so generous so we could allow for roomy storage both sides of the length without compromise. The brief was for it to be very functional, hiding away all the unsightly kit of life such as sports and wet weather gear, providing Monty the dog with a bed but also lots of hooks and cubbies for easy access grabbing on the run! However, we also wanted the room to feel distinctive and jolly with smart accents so ensured the hardware was antique brass and wood was walnut to deliver that elevated feel. For the tall, elegant and symmetrical joinery, we chose a gorgeous warm, mid blue that has a presence, but doesn’t weigh heavily on the room, lit beautifully by three tall sash windows which we dressed with roman blinds in Lewis & Wood’s linen Etienne in Moonstone. The family bench for pulling on outdoor shoes is another lively fabric to add energy; Fermoie’s Cove in a magenta shade.

Sitting Room, West Sussex

This family sitting room sits at the heart of their stunning rural period home. My client already has a great eye for colour and design, so the big challenge was centred around the issue of layout, as the room has three doors so lots of traffic pathways, plus in terms of function it needed to provide the family with comfortable seating to relax in as well as a dining area. The room needed to flow and feel cocooning, but also to be refined, vibrant and have eclectic edge. The characterful brick fireplace had a wood burner installed and we agreed on a layout that zoned top third of the kitchen end of the room as dining space, with an elegant banquette bench, upholstered in Lewis & Wood Bukhara, a print inspired by an ikat coat in the V&A and loaded with scatter cushions from Oka. I felt strongly that the room would really benefit from a darker wood antique table, so I sourced a 19th century oak refectory table which adds great character and weight to the room. Colourwise we went for a new dado, original skirting and radiators in Farrow & Ball Pigeon, then lighter above the dado to ceiling in Blue Gray. These tones were echoed in the celadon of the reupholstered fabric of the large sofa that divides the room, along with the glass and brass console behind it from Neptune. The stunning Atticus tribal print gathered lampshades from Vaughan create a real focal point for the room and really support the vibe we were looking to create.

In terms of the rest of the upholstery the pair of French Louis chairs were sourced from eBay and upholstered in Rapture & Wright’s Serendip, where the generous ottoman was in Nina Campbell Dumas, lending a traditional yet energetic centrepoint. Always keen to repurpose existing pieces we also recovered the client’s pouffe in the small print of Sanderson’s Truffle and piped it in velvet from Samuel & Sons. Last but not least the smaller console, supporting Pooky’s rechargeable lamps with golden marbled shades, was resprayed in Little Greene Adventurer, a timeless plum that works so well with the claret of the existing Tori Murphy blinds.

Garden Room, West Sussex

This was a second project we have done in this Sussex home for a family who wanted to breathe new life into their neglected conservatory. Of course the key element we wanted to retain in this space was the amazing light that is reflected in from the stunning landscape beyond, featuring not only their swimming pool but a lake beyond. It’s a view to die for. The room needed to feel really optimistic and vibrant, but also be versatile as could be used for birthday tea with a grandparent, quiet afternoon reading or for a teen’s pool party (no precious rugs!). Starting with the paint, I wanted to define the stairwell from the rest of the space and so, reflecting the idea of the ‘garden room’, went for the soft green of Farrow & Ball Lichen. Lilac Pink by Edward Bulmer felt like the right creamy pink tone for the rest of the room. When it came to the floor, which needed replacing, rectangular terracotta Naranja tiles were laid in a linear brick style from Bert & May, setting the informal, warm tone of the new room. Laid on top was a practical faux-sisal rug from Unnatural Flooring - perfect for damp feet coming in from the poolside.

Upholstery was a mix of old and new; a pre-owned sofa we reupholstered in Lewis & Wood Totem Cactus fabric with Christopher Farr and Fermoie cushions, then new Oka armless chairs were reupholstered in Penny Morrison’s pretty Dahlia. The striking cornflower blue of the pouffe also has a botanically-inspired print - keeping everything nature-led as much as possible without overkill. Flanking side tables and lamps all added texture and colour through Georgie Wykeham’s octagonal table in Full to Ashoka’s gathered shade from Pukka Print. A garden room wouldn’t feel complete without plenty of rattan which arrived in the form of a large olive coffee table and imposing Birdcage lantern in a pop of mint green from Soane. Shopping high low meant sourcing a chic wood and rattan bench from Zara Home which sits underneath the shelves from which potted plants cascade. A touch of weathered elegance arrives under the stairs, in the form of a cast iron marble bistro table that sits under a distressed antique Georgian mirror and dose of fun added with a Salvesen & Graham Zig Zag border in green, framing the opening to the dining room next door.

Barn Family Room, East Sussex

There is nothing quite like collaborating with a long-standing client, especially when they bring such an evocative starting point to the table. For this converted barn project, my client had fallen for the intense beauty of Edward Bulmer’s Invisible Green and a stunning, multi-coloured embroidered Colefax fabric.

Using this bold pairing as my creative launch point, I set out to design a very liveable family haven, perfect for unwinding and watching TV. From sourcing the perfect upholstery and layered lighting to selecting neat side tables and texture-rich flooring, every element was chosen to balance the barn's scale with intimate, everyday comfort.

Entrance Hall

The brief for this beautiful entrance hall for a 6 bedroom traditional tile-hung Sussex country house was to create an elegant and timeless space where the family can welcome visitors into their home. However the hallway also needed to house a home study area for part-time work and has very lovely morning light so we wanted to also incorporate seating to enjoy this part of the day.

The design needed to work with the previously installed Soane Pineapple Frond curtains in yellow and antique brass wall lights, plus the light oak flooring was to stay. The colour scheme we chose was soft yet had a broad range with muted blue, green and red plus the existing yellow – all complementary and quiet in tone. The backdrop of the walls were in Little Greene Clay Mid a warm neutral which we also painted the ceiling in as it sloped and we didn’t want the oppression of white bringing this down further. A number of items were sourced on antique websites and the chairs were bought and reupholstered in the stunning star of the show; Kashmiri Linen Print in Pomegranate Blue by Brunchwig & Fils, by a reupholsterer found on eBay. The rug is from Birdie Fortescue, lampshades by Matilda Goad and Fermoie, large lamp from Penny Morrison and lacquered wave console by Georgie Wykeham Designs.

Shepherd's Hut, Sussex

This was a genuinely delightful project! We were invited by a previous client to design the interior of her stunning, perfectly-formed shepherds hut, crafted by the bespoke makers at Red Sky. The structure had arrived painted, leaving me with the exciting task of creating a complete colour scheme and concept to inform a detailed sourcing list.

The hut itself is a masterclass in clever design, boasting an adaptable layout that maximises every inch. By day, it’s a functional living area with a folding table, chairs, and a comfortable sofa; by night, the sofa slides flat to reveal a cozy double bed, with bedding stored neatly in the custom headboard the following morning.

To achieve the desired organic and romantic feel, the window dressings were critical. We selected Baker Lifestyle’s Seaton Stripe in Aqua/Red - fabric that delivered a rich and impactful pattern. This was used for custom blackout Roman blinds and a full-length curtain with a tie-back for the doorway. A contrast lining was added so the design could be appreciated even from outside. Finally, carefully chosen accessories like mirrors, additional shelving, lighting, and plush cushions completed the space, adding layers of warmth and luxury.

Batchelor's Bedroom, East Sussex

I sourced a pair of these beautiful leather beside tables from English Leather Trunks and they really set the tone for this gentleman's bedroom. Walls are in the classic darker yet gentle Navy Blue by Edward Bulmer headboard in GP & J Baker Acorn wool, lamp by Pooky, aptly named their 'Porcini' and jute rug from La Redoute.

Wine Room, Surrey

This wine room is positioned just off a dining room that I also decorated. The client and I wanted the space to feel distinctive, dark and earthy with a masculine edge. Brinjal, best described as Farrow & Ball’s ‘sophisticated aubergine’, sets the tone for this whole space. My favourite feature of this room is the hammered finish, solid brass Moroccan freestanding basin that sits upon the raw, waney-edged oak worktop, backed by burnished gold-effect painted splashback; all adding drama and texture. Much of the wall-space is hidden with foxed finish, antique mirroring that gives the impression of limitless depth and a vintage vibe.

Room temperature and cool wine storage is provided as a pair of horizontal, X-rack cupboards overhead and double Fisher & Paykel fridges below, also included is a shallow, side-lit glasses unit. The stand-up bar island encourages visitors to linger a while and enjoy the enveloping atmosphere of this wine room, perhaps away from the party, with panelling in Farrow & Ball’s warm and muted Charleston Gray continued from the adjacent dining room.

Kitchen, Surrey

This unusually triangular-shaped kitchen is part of a large extension project, added to a Victorian property near Guildford. The feel of the space was to be simple, calm and fresh as the owners have a pared-back, minimalist style. Working alongside their kitchen designers my role was to create a colour palette, choose tiles and paints, lighting, additional furnishings and give practical design advice that fed into the overall kitchen layout.

Flooring was important as the Clients wanted to continue the tile outside the huge 3m sliding glass door window as external paving, the Taupe Arabello porcelain tile with it’s warm tone and matt texture from Floors of Stone provided just the right surface. Units were in Pavilion Gray and pared with the elegant, blue gray of De Nimes both from Farrow & Ball and we warmed this cooler scheme with walls in Little Greene’s China Clay. All the wood details are in rich walnut that again worked to bring warmth and a soft luxuriance to the space. The comfortable TV corner of the room is defined with a blue and cream, bespoke Jennifer Manners rug and cushions in Kate Forman’s bold Kenji pattern lend a pop of colour.

Guest Bedroom, East Sussex

Thanks to Edward Bulmer French Blue this basement guest bedroom is an enticing smokey grey blue that allows it to shine not sink in the basement of the house and provide a welcoming environment for visitors. Beautiful curved headboard in a Linwood fabric called Mismi, bench and bedside table from Rowen and Wren and pretty lamp from Chelsea Textiles.

Master Bedroom

This bedroom sits in the basement of a 3 storey house and need elevating to feel elegant and serene, despite it's lack of natural light. The Colefax & Fowler embroidered, multi-coloured Sintra fabric headboard is the star of the show, ably supported by their Wendle wallpaper and elegant lumbar cushion that used a strip of Lewis & Wood border fabric with a contrast velvet trim and back for softness.

The Sofas & Stuff small bed-end sofa has two Rapture & Wright cushions that give a pop of pattern in the foreground. The bedside tables are a pair of lacquered Wave tables by Georgie Wykeham that echo the pretty, elegant theme.

Sitting Room

This beautiful sitting room room was the old school room for the Grade II listed, East Sussex stately home it's attached to. It's owner loves blue and green, so the space became a celebration of these colours, inspired from a stunning painting now hung over the elegant Chelsea Textiles drinks cabinet. As the space needed to have plenty of seating for family visits, the heart of the room is centred around the woodburner and offers comfort for six. I kept the fireplace neutral, but gave it more character and the room a little extra 'perch' seating with a bronze and fire fender upholstered in a jolly stripe from Acres Farm. Lots of existing joinery houses the owner's ornaments and books, plus hides away the television, but I did design some more bespoke joinery to form an office corner for sorting admin, designed to be minimalist in style; painted India Yellow to give a punch of colour, but with a sleek oak worktop. A pair of curtains and matching blinds are made up from a pretty beige print from GP&J Baker. The kitchen was still in good condition so I breathed new life into it with a new paint colour in a soft green that was spray painted on effectively, then lifted further with a marble corian work surfaces, a glass splashback for the hob and antique brass knobs and handles throughout.

“Working with Charlotte has been a real pleasure as she helped us reconfigure and redecorate four bedrooms and source pieces for several other rooms. From the start she took the time to get to know our tastes and to understand what we wanted from each room. Because of that, every room works in the way we need and feels like a part of our home. She has a beautiful eye for colour, fabric and detail. I always get comments on the hardware choices and trims that she helped select - these finishing touches are really the things that lift the whole space. For each choice to be made Charlotte always managed to give us a well-considered range of options, from antique and high-end pieces to high-street finds. Charlotte is unflappable and wonderfully responsive. She respected our budget and timings throughout. When problems came up, as they always do, she was quick to help us find practical, sensible solutions. Above all, she is an incredibly nice person to work with. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her. In fact, I'm already eyeing up the rest of the house for our next project together.” Francesca Bennetts
